The legend of Baron Samedi originally comes from Haitian folklore and voodoo. He is a quite terrifying character, strongly associated with death, cemeteries and evil spirits. A version of the character even appears in the James Bond film Live and Let Die, an apparently unkillable foe, despite all of Bond’s efforts.
