Are Online Slots Rigged?

There is no worse feeling than thinking everything is against you. With online slot games this is particularly the case, and a losing streak can often lead players to exclaim that the games are ‘rigged’ in some way to ensure that they do not win. However, this is not the case. Online slot games cannot be rigged, rather they are subject to strict regulation which ensures that their chances of winning and RTP must be clearly labelled and available to view online.

What is RTP and how does it affect you?

RTP stands for return to player and is usually expressed as a percentage. In essence, it represents how much on average the slot will payout. This is always below 100%, and the difference between 100% and the number specified on the slot machine is known as the “house edge”, i.e. the amount of takings which the game provider keeps. Whilst on table games such as poker the RTP can be as low as 60%, with most slot games it hovers around the 96% mark. In real terms, this would mean that for every $10,000 spent, a total of $9600 would be returned to the playerbase. Where people feel that the game is rigged is when it doesn’t conform to these statistics for themselves. However, this does not mean that the game is rigged. For a lot of people, this number will be much lower, and for some much higher, as those with a lower individual RTP contribute to the mega jackpots that everyone loves to play for.

Losing Runs

There is nothing worse than going through a losing run spin after spin during online slots, but the important thing to remember before you cry foul is that these slot games are set up for you to lose money, whether it be immediately or in the long run. Of course, there will be the odd person that makes a profit from these games, however to suggest that online slots are rigged implies an expectation to profit from them. The aim of slot games is largely enjoyment, as the large variety of genres available on any casino site will demonstrate, but the primary and overriding aim will always be to take money from their customers. For this reason, it is more important than ever to gamble responsibly, never bet more than you can afford to lose and never chase your losses in the hope to win the lost money back.

How could casinos be rigged?

As mentioned earlier, the primary aim of online slots is to make money. If this is the case, it is impossible for them to be rigged no matter how much money they end up taking from players. Whether the RTP stands at 30% or 90%, these are not rigged games as they are explicitly centred around making money, meaning that winning money is more surprising than losing it. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to describe online slots being rigged, unless it is based on a misunderstanding of their primary function.
